Peter Schmidt at 4 years old, black & white photograph, November 1935
(photograph provided by Sarah Haffner)
.
Photographed in Germany. A few years later, he and his mother would flee Nazi Germany for England, to be followed shortly thereafter by his step father, Raimund. His siblings were born in England, Oliver in October 1938 and Sarah in February 1940. Peter's mother was Jewish, Raimund was not, a union that was forbidden(considered to be a racial disgrace)in Germany at the time.
.
Sarah has been very supportive of the endeavor to cement Peter's legacy. Many thanks to her for sending this, and several other pictures of him taken throughout his life.

I gave her a copy of the Fifth Edition for her use in her work on the book. She has written several interesting articles on Eno lately, among them one which has drawn the interest of this blog: http://www.rhizome.org/editorial/3015

Peter Schmidt journal and sketchbooks...

. Peter Schmidt
. Patrick Hourihan
. Watford School of Art
When in London a few years ago, Esme, Peter's wife loaned me a journal and several of his sketchbooks. At the time, they had more information than I could process, due to the fact that I was very unfamiliar with his body of work(there were only about 40 images in our archive at that point). After shelving them for some time, I had another look with a more informed overview. I've found them to be a rich valley beyond the mountains. The materials now have a relationship with the paintings and processes he used to get to the point of actually sitting down and working. The journal has a section on Peter's personal finances(as he was on sabbatical from Watford, his only income was from selling his work, it was a tough time for him, this section will remain obscured), a section devoted to his poetry, and a section of sketches for paintings intended for future realization(the pages are 17cm x 9.5cm). The sketchbooks explore Peter's interest in the "flip book" concept, of which there is now a video of his only published work in this medium, "Flikker Book 7", in the website's Publications section. Each "flip book" comprises of ever evolving drawings on the subject at hand. I'm thinking about an appropriate way of presenting these.
.
Over the next few weeks, I'll post to this blog(and eventually to PeterSchmidtWeb), the images of his handwritten and typed poetry(much of which became part of his and Patrick Hourihan's book, "a secret in stone"), and the sketches, pointing out where evident their connections to paintings. The journal was created from February through June or July of 1979, and the sketchbooks are circa 1975.
.
Many thanks to Esme for entrusting these materials to me.

Selbstbildnis(Self Portrait), Sarah Haffner, tempera and oil chalk, 2002
.
.
.
I asked Sarah if she wouldn't mind having this painting of her's displayed on our blog. It's small gesture of appreciation for her generous donation of new images and the time and effort she put into diligently preparing them. As with Peter's family in London, I'd like her to be a permanent part of this website, and the endeavor to preserve his legacy. With her typical enthusiasm she replied:
.
"I would be delighted and honoured to have my self portrait on your and Peter' s blog. Thank you for asking. It is one of the paintings I did while I was on a somewhat mad spree in 2002/2003 which lasted for several months, painting self portraits in all sorts of techniques. I was trying to"loosen up" and find a different way of painting from the very controlled oil paintings I had been doing before then. I chose to do self portraits because all I needed was a mirror, but by the end of the project, I was thoroughly fed up with them."
.
Again, my many thanks to Sarah.

Peter Schmidt's website has been updated...

.
.
.
We recently received just over 50 images of new and rediscovered images of Peter's work from his sister Sarah. All were of his watercolor paintings, and have been added to the Later Works - after 1970 gallery in the section His Work. Of the 18 new images, three were from Sarah's own collection, and 26 were better quality images of works already in our online collection. Also added: an image of the catalogue that accompained Peter's first one man exhibition at the Beaux Arts Gallery in 1961 to the Miscellaneous section, two images of him in performance with The Boyle Family in 1966, one of Peter working on a piece at the Whitechapel Gallery in 1975 to the Images of Him section, and the 1961 painting "Ruth Reading" was added to the Early Works - before 1970 gallery. We have embedded a video of his "Flikker Book 7" in Publications. As always, this was made possible with the assistance of our website designer, Maria Kiernan.

Peter's statement on his work(tranlated into English): "Nearly all my recent works are variations on a topic and this topic to a logical principle of job. It has beginning with an only sign on a burlap colored white woman or; this sign, encircled from according to color and a tone, originates a second affirmation. Both come encircled a third color, and a third affirmation is had thus."
